Meet Your Mushrooms: A Guide to the Five Real Mushrooms Blends at Trillium
Long before "adaptogen" became a wellness buzzword, humans were already turning to fungi for healing.
Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,300-year-old mummy found in the Alps, was carrying birch polypore mushrooms — believed to have been used medicinally — when he died. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, reishi has been called the "mushroom of immortality" and used for over 2,000 years. Cordyceps and turkey tail show up again and again across centuries of East Asian healing traditions.
This isn't a new trend. It is one of the oldest forms of medicine we have.
The Quiet Genius of Fungi
Fungi are also just plain special on this planet. They are neither plant nor animal, but their own kingdom entirely — and they quietly do a huge amount of the planet's healing work.
Underground fungal networks, called mycelium, break down dead material and cycle nutrients back into the soil. They connect trees so they can share resources across whole forests. They even help clean up contaminated land through a process called mycoremediation. In a real sense, fungi have been the Earth's decomposers, connectors, and regenerators for hundreds of millions of years — long before humans figured out how to bottle them into capsules.
So when we talk about mushroom supplements, we are really tapping into something ancient: a relationship between fungi and living things that has been healing bodies and ecosystems alike for a very long time.
Why Real Mushrooms
If you've noticed a few jars on the shelves at Trillium, they're from Real Mushrooms — a brand I love for one simple reason.
They only use the actual mushroom (the fruiting body), extracted with hot water, never mycelium grown on grain and never fillers. Every batch is third-party tested and verified for beta-glucan content, so what's on the label is what's actually in the capsule.
This matters more than most people realize. A large portion of the mushroom supplement market uses "mycelium on grain" — essentially the root network grown on rice or oats, then dried and ground together. What ends up in the capsule is mostly grain, not mushroom. Real Mushrooms doesn't do that. What you're getting is the mushroom itself, prepared the traditional way.
Here's a look at the five varieties we carry, and what each one is best known for.
Cordyceps-M — Energy and Stamina
Think energy, endurance, and vitality.
Made from Cordyceps militaris — the only cordyceps species that can be responsibly farmed at scale, rather than harvested from the wild — this one is popular with anyone chasing steadier energy through the day or looking to support stamina during exercise.
Traditionally associated with endurance and healthy lung and kidney function, it's an easy add for the mid-afternoon slump crowd.
Traditional and researched benefits include support for:
Healthy energy levels and reduced fatigue
Athletic performance and oxygen utilization
Immune system function
Healthy kidney and liver function
Think: energy + stamina + recovery.
Lion's Mane — Brain and Cognitive Support
Think brain health, memory, and focus.
Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is probably one of the most recognizable functional mushrooms today. It contains compounds called hericenones, which are being studied for their relationship with nerve growth factor (NGF) and healthy nerve-cell function.
Research into Lion's Mane has explored areas including memory, cognitive function, concentration, and healthy brain aging.
Rather than thinking of Lion's Mane as a stimulant, I like to think of it as a mushroom for nourishing and supporting the nervous system and brain over time.
Traditional and researched benefits include:
Support for mental clarity and focus
Maintenance of cognitive function and nerve cell health
Emotional well-being and a balanced mood
Gut health via the gut–brain connection
The body's ability to adapt to everyday stress
Think: brain + memory + focus.
Ergo+ — Healthy Aging and Cellular Protection
Think longevity and antioxidant protection.
Ergo+ is a little different from the other supplements on this list. Its star ingredient is L-ergothioneine, a naturally occurring antioxidant amino acid found especially abundantly in mushrooms.
Interestingly, our bodies cannot make ergothioneine themselves, yet we have a specialized transporter that helps us absorb and retain it. This is one of those fascinating clues that our biology seems designed to receive something from the fungal world.
Ergothioneine is being studied for its ability to help protect cells from oxidative stress, making it particularly interesting in the fields of healthy aging, cognitive health, and cellular resilience.
For someone interested in longevity and maintaining health as we age, Ergo+ may be worth knowing about.
Research-backed benefits of L-ergothioneine:
Supports healthy cognitive function and mental clarity
Promotes antioxidant defences against oxidative stress
Helps maintain cellular health as you age
Supports overall well-being and resilience
Backed by emerging human research on healthy aging and neuroprotection.
Think: longevity + antioxidant + cellular health.
5 Defenders — Everyday Immune Support
Think daily, broad-spectrum mushroom support.
5 Defenders combines five functional mushrooms rather than concentrating on one. This formula provides a broader range of mushroom compounds — Real Mushrooms formulates it with 30% Turkey Tail, 20% Reishi, 20% Shiitake, 20% Maitake, and 10% Chaga.
You get immune support, stress resilience (thanks to reishi), and antioxidant activity all in one scoop or capsule. It's a great "starter" mushroom product if you aren't sure where to begin.
What each mushroom in the blend contributes:
Reishi promotes calm and supports a healthy stress response
Shiitake and Maitake offer immune-modulating compounds and support metabolic function
Turkey Tail delivers powerful beta-glucans which may support the activation of important immune pathways
Chaga brings potent antioxidant activity to support cellular health
Think: daily wellness + immune support + resilience.
Turkey Tail — Focused Immune and Gut Support
Think immune system and gut health.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is one of the most extensively studied functional mushrooms and is naturally particularly rich in beta-glucans and protein-bound polysaccharides.
It has a long history of traditional use in East Asia, and compounds derived from Turkey Tail have attracted considerable scientific interest for their effects on immune function.
Turkey Tail is also interesting from a digestive perspective. Its polysaccharides may have prebiotic-like effects, helping support the intestinal environment as well as healthy immune responses.
Compared with 5 Defenders, which provides broad mushroom support, Turkey Tail is the more focused choice when immune and digestive support are the main goals.
Research-backed benefits:
Encourages a balanced immune response
Supports overall well-being
Supports antioxidant defences and cellular resilience
Supports gut health and healthy microbiome balance
Think: immunity + gut + resilience.
A Closer Look at Turkey Tail Science
Turkey Tail's reputation isn't just tradition — it is one of the most clinically studied mushrooms in the world.
A compound derived from it, PSK (also called Krestin), has been an approved adjunct cancer therapy in Japan for decades. That means it is used alongside chemotherapy, never in place of it. Research shows notably improved long-term survival for colorectal and stomach cancer patients when PSK is added to standard treatment, with more preliminary evidence for other cancers (sources include Memorial Sloan Kettering and CancerChoices).
Here in North America, Bastyr University ran an NIH-funded, FDA-approved trial giving turkey tail extract to breast cancer patients alongside their treatment. This is the same trial that mycologist Paul Stamets credits with supporting his own mother's recovery — a story he tells in his TEDMED talk.

Worth being clear: none of this means turkey tail treats or replaces cancer therapy, and it is not FDA-approved as a cancer treatment. But it is a rare case where old mushroom wisdom has real, ongoing science behind it.
One Mushroom Doesn't Do Everything
Functional mushrooms are sometimes marketed as though they are interchangeable, but that isn't the most useful way to look at them.
Each mushroom has its own traditional history, its own chemical composition, and its own emerging area of research. Someone looking for more physical stamina may be interested in Cordyceps. Someone thinking about memory and healthy brain aging may gravitate toward Lion's Mane. Ergo+ takes us into the area of cellular aging and antioxidant protection. 5 Defenders and Turkey Tail place more emphasis on immune wellness.

A Small but Important Note
As with herbs, supplements are not a replacement for a good diet, adequate sleep, movement, and appropriate medical care. They are simply another tool we can use to support the body.
These are dietary supplements, not medicine. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and it is worth a quick chat with your healthcare provider before starting anything new — especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.
